Spokane, WA—With a little over a month until the 31st running of the Lilac Bloomsday Run, organizers are eagerly seeking volunteers to help with check-in, T-shirt distribution, and a variety of other tasks on race weekend.
“The success of Bloomsday is totally dependent of the support of nearly 5,000 volunteers,” said Bloomsday Race Director Don Kardong. “Most of our volunteer positions don’t require much, if any, prior experience, but it’s crucial that we fill all open positions to make sure things proceed smoothly before, during and after the run.”
Those interested in helping with this year’s event are encouraged to log on to Bloomsday’s web site (www.bloomsdayrun.org) and click the “Volunteers” button. Descriptions of the seven main volunteer categories are listed there—Registration Input, Bag Stuffing, Number Distribution, Start Line, Water Aid, Finish Line, T-Shirt Distribution—along with a description of what’s involved and a link to the individual responsible for volunteer recruitment for that category. Potential volunteers can send an email to the person in charge of the category to get additional information or to sign up to help.
“We’re especially searching for volunteers to help with distribution of runner numbers at the Convention Center on Saturday, May 5th from 11:30 to 3:30,” said Kardong, “and we also need a large number of volunteers to help hand out finisher T-shirts on race morning.”
Depending on the nature of the job, many of Bloomsday’s volunteers also participate in the seven-and-a-half mile run-jog-walk. Those wishing to go the distance can sign up online at www.bloomsdayrun.org, or fill out and mail in a printed entry form, which are available at numerous locations throughout the Inland Northwest. Mailed entries must be postmarked by April 17 to take advantage of the low $14.00 entry fee. In addition, participants can sign up at The Sports Authority’s two local stores from now until the entry deadline of April 17.
This year’s Bloomsday is scheduled for Sunday, May 6. Over 45,000 runners, joggers and walkers are expected to participate.
