BEST TEAM NAME FINALISTS ANNOUNCED

April 1, 2015—It may be April Fool’s Day, but the serious business of determining which Bloomsday Corporate Cup teams registered with the best team names is now over. After much deliberation—and more than a few laughs—a group of Bloomsday sponsors and organizers have announced this year’s finalists.

From a pool of over 370 teams, 26 finalists (list below) have been selected for their creativity and witty word play. From puns that reflect a company’s business to references to popular culture, the list extends from Fairchild 141st Air Refueling Wing’s “Pass N’ Gas” to attorneys Workland & Witherspoon’s “Our Briefs Are Tight.”

“Our judges were amused by the wide variety of team names,” remarked Corporate Cup Director Carol Hunter. “But after some mostly serious deliberation they whittled down the group to the ones they thought really stood out from the pack.”

The battle each year for the top team name is almost as competitive as the actual race itself, and the prizes are just as coveted. The first, second, and third place winners will be announced after Bloomsday in the Souvenir Results Booklet distributed by The Inlander, and the first place team will receive a plaque and will be honored guests at the annual awards luncheon. Last year’s winner was the GU English Department’s “Pair O’Thighs Lost,” which beat out Spokane Public Schools’ “No Teacher Left Behind” (second place) and dentist Dr. John Hoppe’s “Don’t Follow Us We’re Flossed” (third place).

This year’s panel of judges included Bloomsday Race Director and Founder Don Kardong, Lilac Bloomsday Association President Steven Jones, Leanne Mason of Northwest Orthopaedic Specialists, Kelly Risse of Physical Therapy Associates, Chief KXLY Meteorologist Kris Crocker, Inlander Publisher Ted McGregor, Stefanie Bruno of Premera Blue Cross, Katy Wagnon of Washington Trust Bank, and Spokane Mayor David Condon.

Although registration is now closed for the Corporate Cup competition, runners still have time to register for Bloomsday. Mailed entries for the low $18 entry fee must be postmarked by midnight, April 14th, while online entrants have until Sunday, April 19th to do so. Late entries for the $35.00 fee will be accepted online from April 20th through the 26th, and at the Bloomsday Trade Show the weekend of May 1-2. No entries will be accepted Sunday, May 3rd.
