It’s time to Step Up Spokane!

Oct 26, 2010

Spokane, WA—Bloomsday Race Director Don Kardong joined Spokane Mayor Mary Verner and other local leaders today at City Hall for the launch of a new program to get our community moving: Step Up Spokane!

The goal of the campaign is simple: To promote healthier lifestyles by encouraging people in Spokane to engage in daily physical activity and healthier eating. Organizers believe Spokane can become the healthiest city in the west.

Spokane—like most places in our nation—is suffering from an epidemic of obesity and being overweight. This epidemic impacts everything from personal health to workplace productivity. That’s why organizers think it’s time to step up and start moving.

Mayor Verner is joined in encouraging our citizens to move more by Spokane Shock head coach Rob Keefe, Bloomsday founder and director Don Kardong, Hoopfest director Rick Steltenpohl, Gonzaga University women’s basketball player Courtney Vandersloot, Spokane Chiefs and Spokane Indians managing partner Bobby Brett, and longtime television anchor and health reporter Julie Humphreys.

Step Up Spokane is a collaborative effort of companies and businesses dedicated to improving the health of our citizens. The board of directors includes representatives from Spokane Cardiology, Premera Blue Cross, YMCA of the Inland Northwest, Spokane Regional Health District, Inland Northwest Health Services (INHS), Providence Sacred Heart MedicalCenter, and KL Crane Associates.

Program sponsors include Premera Blue Cross, Providence Health Care, Spokane Cardiology, Spokane County Medical Society, and INHS.

“Get ready, Spokane,” the Mayor said. “We’re going to challenge you to Step Up.”
