Bloomsday Online Training Program Launched by Step Up Spokane

Feb 28, 2011

Spokane, WA—Those interested in receiving information and support as they train for Bloomsday have a new online tool this year provided by Step Up Spokane, a new non-profit that enourages healthy living. Step Up Spokane has developed a free online training program to help participants get ready for Bloomsday in the weeks leading up to the run.

“We’re really pleased to be partnering with Step Up Spokane,” said Bloomsday Race Director Don Kardong. “We know a lot of people are looking for direction as they prepare for Bloomsday, and the system Step Up Spokane has developed will be helpful to runners, joggers and walkers of all abilities.”

The training program is free. Participants can register at www.stepupspokane.org and choose how many days/miles a week they want to train. After that, they simply follow the prescribed schedule and track their results as they go. They’ll be able to watch the miles add up as they get encouragement from other runners and walkers joining the Step Up community on Facebook. In addition, those tracking training with Step Up will be eligible to win two free Bloomsday entries.

Spokane notables participating in the Step Up Spokane effort include Mayor Mary Verner, Spokane Shock head coach Rob Keefe, Bloomsday founder and director Don Kardong, Hoopfest director Rick Steltenpohl, Gonzaga University women’s basketball player Courtney Vandersloot, Spokane Chiefs and Spokane Indians managing partner Bobby Brett, and longtime television anchor and health reporter Julie Humphreys.

Sign-up for the 35th annual Lilac Bloomsday Run, scheduled for Sunday, May 1, is available online at www.bloomsdayrun.org. For those wishing to mail in their entries, printed entry brochures are available at Washington Trust Bank locations, Safeway stores, the two Sports Authority stores in Spokane, and other locations throughout the region.
