Inspiring Healthy Habits and Confidence in Young Runners

Since its inception in 1986, the Fit for Bloomsday program has grown from 2,500 kids in 35 schools to an impressive 7,000+ students in more than 70 schools across the region. This free, 6-8 week training initiative is designed to introduce elementary school students to the joys of running, all while fostering healthy habits that last a lifetime.

Developed by a passionate team of Bloomsday volunteers in collaboration with physical education instructors, coaches, and parents, the program helps students prepare for the Bloomsday race while encouraging a commitment to lifelong fitness. Fit for Bloomsday is more than just a training program—it’s an opportunity for children to experience the excitement of being active, setting goals, and working together as a team.

What the Program Offers:

The Lilac Bloomsday Association provides a comprehensive structure to guide participants every step of the way. Schools receive all the information, materials, and incentives needed to run the program, while school personnel and volunteer coaches lead the effort. The program includes:

  • Structured Workouts: Designed to build endurance and confidence in young runners.
  • Encouragement: Coaches and volunteers cheer on participants, helping them stay motivated and inspired.
  • Fun Activities: Engaging and enjoyable exercises that make fitness exciting for children.
